How it Works
New Lifeguards & Lifeguarding Recertification Courses are Hybrid, meaning the majority of the classroom time is done on your own in advance of the class. As a note, you will get access to the online portion of the class as soon as you register for the course - passing the online portion does NOT mean you passed the class. Please be prepared to swim for this class. Non-swimmers (who are not on a swim team or do not swim often) are STRONGLY Encouraged to practice before trying to complete the lifeguard on-site class.
ONLINE PORTION
An email will be sent out after registering that has all instructions about how to complete the online portion of this course.

For Lifeguard On-Site Training
On the first day of practical class, you should expect to get immediately into the water after we sign in and get settled.
On the first day, or on the pretest day,
-
Swim Test: Swim using front crawl (freestyle) or breaststroke continuously for 150 yards showing alternated breathing without stopping or rolling onto the back. Side stroke and backstroke are not permitted. Directly after touching the wall on the 6th lap, lifeguard candidates will tread water using only feet for 2 minutes. After 2 minutes, candidates will finish up by swimming an additional 50 yards.
-
Timed event: Lifeguard candidates will have 1 minute 40 seconds to swim 20 yards, then surface dive to retrieve a 10 lb. object from the bottom of the pool. Then they must resurface holding the brick on their chest as they swim back to the starting point using their feet heading backward. Finally, the swimmer will exit the pool without using the ladder.
You may wear goggles for the swim portion of the pre-test only. If you wear contacts please come prepared to have no goggles on for the remainder of the class. (aka bring glasses or extra contacts) Lifeguarding is not done with a pair of goggles in hand – you need to learn to work without goggles.

**An American Red Cross Certificate will be issued to candidates who complete all required training and will be vaild for 2 YEARS from the final date of the course.**
